ISLE OF MAN TO SHOWCASE CAPTIVE INSURANCE EXPERTISE IN LONDON

The Manx Insurance Managers Association (MIMA) today announces that it will host the first in its new series of “Captive Conferences” in London in October this year.

The conference, entitled “The Isle of Man – the domicile of choice for captive insurance”, aims to provide a thorough exploration of the future of captive insurance and Isle of Man’s key role in this growing industry.

Confirmed keynote speakers at the conference include Sir Michael Bishop CBE, Chairman of British Midland plc, Dennis Mahoney, Chairman, Aon Global, Henk Potts, Investment Analyst for Barclays Wealth, and Economist Roger Nightingale. Speakers have been selected for their pre-eminence, experience and knowledge of the international captive insurance industry.

Derek Patience, Chairman of MIMA, commented: “We are delighted to have secured such an impressive line up of keynote speakers, each highly regarded in their own field and bringing with them a wealth of information from their experience in the Captive sector and the global finance industry. I eagerly await their contribution to the conference, which seeks to build upon the Isle of Man’s long-standing reputation for excellence and innovation in captive insurance solutions”.

Keynote speaker Dennis Mahoney said "Our major industrial and commercial clients continue to express serious concerns with respect to insurers' 'willingness to pay' as opposed to insurers 'ability to pay'. These concerns have been engendered by the all too painful foot-dragging, prevarication and haircutting that many of our clients have experienced from some carriers. These episodes drive home time and again the need for clients to maintain a strong and vibrant captive insurer of their own so as not to be left entirely at the mercy of a perennially boom and bust cyclical market".

John Spellman, Director, Isle of Man Finance, said, “This new industry conference represents an exciting opportunity to develop our close relationship with the City of London and to showcase the many advantages of the Isle of Man as domicile of choice for captive insurance. The Islands’ award-winning package is supported by a cost-effective environment, business-friendly regulation, superb infrastructure, and a can-do attitude that has proved highly successful in attracting leading captive businesses from across the globe”.

The conference will take place on 9th October 2008 at the Barclays Bank headquarters in Canary Wharf. Other speakers will include: Pauline McCracken, National Grid; Jonathan Groves, Marsh; Bob Quane, AIG and Ian Clark, Deloitte. Online registration for the conference will be available shortly at www.isleofmancaptives.im. In the meantime delegates can register their interest by contacting Ray Davies on 01624 686406 or ray.davies@gov.im.
