About the Firm |
Strategic
Risk Solutions (“SRS”) is a leading independent
captive management firm. The firm was founded in 1993 and has
been independently owned by senior management since 2002. SRS
currently has over 100 management clients from all sectors underwriting
a wide variety of coverages for their owners.
With offices in Arizona, Bermuda, Cayman Islands, South Carolina,
Vermont and Boston, SRS is staffed onshore and offshore to meet
our clients’ alternative risk financing needs.
SRS has experience in managing all types of captive facilities
including Single Parent Captives, Group Captives, Risk Retention
Groups, Segregated Cell – Sponsored Captives, Branch Captives,
Not-For-Profit Captives and Special Purpose Captives.
We have clients in all sectors including transportation, manufacturing,
retail, healthcare, energy, professional services industries.
Differentiators
There are seven factors which differentiate SRS from other captive
managers.
 |
Technical depth and expertise
– we provide a range of value added services and technical
expertise that are unmatched by other independent captive
managers. |
 |
One firm approach - We pride ourselves on
pulling in resources from our entire firm or even externally
if a client problem demands it. We are used to working across
offices and disciplines and have a one firm culture and operating
model. |
 |
Multiple Domiciles - We seek to provide our
captives with the option of multiple onshore and offshore
domiciles. Our approach is to remain domicile neutral and
allow our clients to domicile in the territories that are
most appropriate for their captives. |
 |
Customized Solutions - Because many of our
staff has a background as consultants, we look at each situation
and client as a unique opportunity or challenge. We avoid
off the shelf products or solutions or trying to fit a client’s
problem into a preconceived idea or product. |
 |
Independence and focus - Our independent
ownership structure removes any conflicts of interest with
commercial market solutions. Captive management is our core
business. This independent and dedicated approach means that
our services are driven solely by the best interests of our
captive clients |
 |
Flat organization and experienced staff -
We have made a conscious decision to recruit and retain experienced
staff. As such our clients are not “guinea pigs”
for someone learning on the job and we have low staff turnover. |
 |
Life cycle approach - We take a lifecycle
approach to creating, managing and growing captive solutions.
SRS services are provided throughout the lifecycle from accounting,
to underwriting and loss control. |

Professional Ratings |
While
there are no professional ratings of insurance managers, we receive
favorable feedback from clients, partners and regulators on the
quality of the services we provide.
When we are asked to take over existing captives to improve or
supplement the pure accounting service provided by other managers,
we have heard again and again that we provide more in-depth analysis
and high quality technical support than other managers or consultants.
This has been validated by captive regulators in various domiciles
who have commented on the depth and content of our applications
and business plans that support new captive applications. Insurance
examiners and regulators give us very high marks on meeting reporting
deadlines and having our client files in order when they conduct
periodic exams.
SRS takes an active role in listening to our clients and seeking
evaluations of services we provide. We conduct a formal annual
survey asking all our clients for feedback. The most recent survey
was returned with an overall score of “4.78” (5 being
“very satisfied” and 1 being “very dis-satisfied”).
In no individual question did a response rate below a “4”.

We are committed to providing the highest quality
service to our clients. This commitment to quality service is
evidenced by:
Our experienced personnel.
A formal peer review process.
Annual stewardship reports.

Alternative Insurance Products and Services |
We
offer our clients a “life cycle” approach to captive
management. Each client has particular service needs, and at SRS
we identify those needs, document the needs in our procedures manual
and ensure that client requests are responded to on a timely basis.
Captive Management Accounting and Financial
Statements
SRS provides accurate and timely accounting reports including
financial statements, notes to the financial statements, work
paper support and annual reports in accordance with domicile regulatory
and client requirements. Our standard captive management services
also include policy issuance, providing ratio analyses, comparisons
to budgets, data collection and warehousing and vendor oversight.
Captive Consulting
and Program Management Services
SRS provides consulting and program management services in support
of its captive management services. The SRS consulting team is
made up of individuals that have strong financial, insurance and
analytical skills and extensive experience in advising clients
on various matters related to the formation and operation of captive
insurance companies. Our consulting services include feasibility
analysis, program management, underwriting, loss analysis and
strategic reviews.

Other Information |
Interactive
Technology
This virtual structure of a captive
usually involves a number of different parties, and communication
on these programs can become complicated. SRS uses interactive
web-based software to create extranets for each of its captive
accounts. This provides smooth communication and the efficient
operation of our captive and risk retention group clients
Practice Groups
SRS has three firm-wide practice groups to co-ordinate services
provided to clients and to be at the forefront of the latest developments
in these areas.
Risk Retention Groups: Our Risk Retention
Group Practice tracks RRG activity at the Federal, NAIC and
state level to proactively advise our RRG clients of industry
developments. The team also handles the filing requirements
of each state. Our team has over 50 years of RRG experience,
including participation in the NAIC Risk Retention Group Handbook
Working Group, the RRG Corporate Governance Task Force and the
RRG (E) Task Force.
Employee Benefits: Our Employee Benefits Practice
increases our focus on the use of captives for health insurance
and employee benefits. SRS is a pioneer in using captives to
insure employee benefits, having consulted on the Columbia Energy
captive, the first captive approved to insure ERISA benefits.
Healthcare Practice: The Healthcare Practice
co-ordinates services provided to clients in the Healthcare
industry regardless of domicile and captive structure. The Healthcare
industry represents an important and growing sector of our business.
Our industry leading healthcare team has worked with over 100
healthcare captives and is experienced in forms of captive and
funding structures.

Publications and More |
November 20.2009: Using
Group Captives for Health Insurance by Jeff
Fitzgerald. While the P/C market continues to create innovative
single parent and group captive programs, the use of captives
to insure accident and health risks has been limited. There have
been less than 20 single parent health insurance programs established
in the past 10 years. The cost of health insurance rises every
year while the P/C market remains soft. Mid-size employers (more
than 50 employees but less than 1,000) are most affected by health
insurance increases and often unaware of alternatives. There is
increasing interest from midsize employers to proactively address
their health insurance costs. Could a captive be the answer? [Download
