Commissioner Lawrence serves as Tennessee's commissioner of commerce and insurance and state fire marshal. Prior to his cabinet appointment by Governor Lee, Commissioner Lawrence held roles including chief deputy commissioner and chief operating officer within the department. As commissioner, he oversees insurance—including captive insurance, fire prevention, regulatory boards, and TennCare Oversight, among others.
Under his leadership, the department collected around $1.25 billion in fees and premium taxes for the state's general fund in 2020. Commissioner Lawrence has championed initiatives to reduce fees for professionals, enhance customer service, and streamline regulations.
An attorney with an master of business administration degree from the University of Tennessee and a bachelor of arts degree from Wheaton College, Commissioner Lawrence is committed to balancing oversight of insurance and professions while promoting consumer advocacy and public safety. He resides in Nashville with his wife, Amy, and their three children.
