In this interview, we explore the upcoming 2024 Cayman Captive Forum, taking place December 3–5 in the Cayman Islands, with Alanna Trundle, chair of the Forum Committee and president of Global Captive Management. Originally from England, Alanna has extensive experience in group captives, single-parent captives, and segregated portfolio companies. After qualifying with Deloitte and becoming a fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of England and Wales, she moved to the Cayman Islands, where she now leads the world's largest captive insurance conference. Alanna shares insights on this year's forum, its significance to the captive insurance industry, and the Cayman Islands' role as a premier captive domicile.

Q: The Cayman Captive Forum has become one of the premier events in the captive insurance space. What do you believe sets this forum apart from others in terms of value and impact on the industry?

A: There are many reasons the Cayman Captive Forum is so special. One of its key strengths is our dedication to featuring real-world experiences from Cayman captive owners, sharing practical insights into common challenges. We've introduced additional networking events this year to foster even greater connections. And of course, having this all unfold against the stunning backdrop of the world-famous Seven Mile Beach truly elevates the entire experience.

Q: As the Cayman Islands insurance sector continues to grow steadily, how do you expect this development to shape the discussions and sessions at this year's forum?

A: The growth in our industry is already reflected in the rising registration numbers, surpassing last year's figures at the same point. Our agenda this year is particularly robust, covering key topics such as risk management, artificial intelligence, diversity, property insurance, and emerging technologies—ensuring that attendees receive forward-thinking insights on the latest trends impacting captives.

Q: The agenda for the 2024 Cayman Captive Forum covers a wide range of topics. Are there any specific sessions or key themes you're particularly excited about? What makes them stand out for attendees this year?

A: This year, we placed a strong emphasis on diversity—not just in the themes but also in our speaker lineup, with 48 percent of our speakers being women. Key sessions include a "Women in Leadership" panel, a session on "The Importance of Diversity in your Captive," and a panel discussing "How To Cultivate Healthy Inclusive and High-Performance Workplaces." These sessions promise to offer invaluable perspectives on how diversity can drive innovation within our industry.

Q: Keynote speakers often set the tone for the event. Can you give us a preview of the key messages or trends attendees can expect to hear from this year's speakers?

A: We are excited to be featuring two inspiring keynote speakers this year.

On Wednesday, Anthony Robles, a three-time All-American wrestler, National Collegiate Athletic Association wrestling champion, and National Wrestling Hall of Fame inductee, will be the opening keynote speaker. Anthony, who was born with one leg, will share his journey of triumph over adversity, a testament to his unwavering determination and self-belief. His inspiring story, soon to be featured in his upcoming biopic, Unstoppable, premiering on December 6, is expected to captivate attendees.

On Thursday morning, our cyber keynote speaker, Jon Engstrom, a 20-year veteran of a major US metropolitan police department and certified ethical hacker, will delve into the latest trends in online fraud, computer intrusion, and emerging cyber threats.

Q: As Forum Committee chair, you play a crucial role in shaping the direction of the forum. What were some of the key goals for this year's event, and how have you worked to achieve them?

A: Our goal is always to innovate and keep the forum fresh and engaging for attendees. This year, we've introduced new features such as a pickleball tournament, an afternoon tea, and a breakfast specifically for first-time attendees. These additions will not only offer unique networking opportunities but also create memorable experiences that attendees will look forward to year after year.

Q: The captive industry is continuously evolving, with new regulations, technologies, and market dynamics shaping its future. How does the Cayman Captive Forum plan to address some of these emerging trends and challenges?

A: We're tackling these emerging trends head-on, with a new "Insurance Market Update" panel this year. This session will feature industry experts who will discuss emerging trends in the insurance industry, the implications of climate change, technological advancements, and regulatory shifts on captives. This will equip attendees with valuable insights on how to navigate the evolving landscape of the insurance market.

Q: Networking is a key aspect of any industry conference. What initiatives or opportunities will this year's forum offer to facilitate meaningful connections between attendees?

A: We've placed a major focus on enhancing networking opportunities throughout the event. In addition to our evening events across the Ritz-Carlton resort, networking lounges will be available throughout the day. Furthermore, attendees can participate in both a golf tournament and the new pickleball tournament, offering multiple avenues to build connections in relaxed settings.

Q: To wrap up, are there any additional insights or key highlights you'd like to share about the 2024 Cayman Captive Forum that we haven't covered?

A: The beauty of the Cayman Captive Forum is its broad appeal. Whether you're a first-time attendee, or you attend regularly, there's something for everyone. From learning about the latest in captives, to reconnecting with industry colleagues, the forum truly has it all. Not to mention, the event significantly contributes to the local economy and supports the Insurance Managers Association of Cayman (IMAC) Educational Scholarship Fund, which has raised nearly $5 million to date. And, of course, the grand finale on Seven Mile Beach is always a highlight, offering a stunning and celebratory close to the world's largest captive forum event.

Thank you, Alanna.
