Cayman Hosts Inaugural Reinsurance Conference, ReConnect

The Cayman Islands recently hosted ReConnect, its first conference dedicated to reinsurance. Nearly 450 individuals attended the event, with about half representing international entities.

The event was organized by the Cayman International Reinsurance Companies Association (CIRCA), with 110 organizations represented and 30 sponsors participating in the event.

The event took place over 2 days and included presentations, panel discussions, networking events, and exhibitions showcasing the reinsurance sector.

The Honorable André M. Ebanks, MP, deputy premier, said in the welcome remarks, "It's clear that while reinsurance is not new to Cayman, a variety of factors have resulted in us becoming a very attractive jurisdiction. By supporting reinsurance opportunities, we create jobs for our people and educational opportunities and career pathways for our youth, bolster philanthropic efforts, and attract fresh talent that can assist with addressing current issues. This partnership between the private sector and government embodies the Cayman magic once again."

During the "Emerging Regulatory Topics" panel, Kara Ebanks, head of the Insurance Supervision Division at the Cayman Islands Monetary Authority (CIMA), discussed Cayman's application for NAIC Qualified Jurisdiction status, reinforcing the jurisdiction's regulatory credentials.

Presentations on "Beyond the Boardroom" showcased Cayman's appeal and supporting infrastructure, reinforcing its status as a preferred destination for reinsurance operations. "The Asset Managers' Lens on Cayman" session explored key characteristics of the reinsurance market that make it attractive, both generally and specifically in the Cayman Islands.

The approachability of the CIMA was highlighted, reaffirming the jurisdiction's commitment to providing a supportive business environment.
