March 18, 2025
Thomas L. "Tom" Adams will retire as president and CEO of the North Carolina Captive Insurance Association (NCCIA) in October 2025, the organization announced. Mr. Adams has held the position since NCCIA's founding in 2013.
During his tenure, North Carolina became the third-largest captive insurance domicile in the United States. Mr. Adams is one of four original founders of NCCIA.
Lea Riddle, incoming chair of NCCIA, said Mr. Adams's leadership contributed significantly to the association's early development and its relationship with the North Carolina General Assembly. "His leadership in the beginning at the general assembly, vision for the domicile's growth, and extensive association management expertise contributed significantly to our success," Mr. Riddle said.
North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey said, "North Carolina's captive industry has benefited greatly from Tom Adams' thoughtful leadership and insights during his tenure as the NCCIA president and CEO. North Carolina's growth as a captive domicile is due in large part to the collaborative relationship fostered between the North Carolina Department of Insurance and the association over the years."
Mr. Adams said, "There comes a time when you realize you are ready to pass the reins to new leadership. As I leave, NCCIA is well-positioned to achieve its next level. As the domicile has reached a dominant position and the Board has adopted a new strategic direction plan, this is an ideal time to transition the organization into new leadership."
